The West Midlands Corporate Golf Challenge has gone out to businesses across the region. A brand new trophy will be competed for annually at Redditch Golf Club with the first event on Friday, June 12, this year.
The event is the brainchild of Worcestershire businessmen Stuart Mee, Phil Guise and Nigel Clay – all past or current chairman of Redditch Golf Club.
And the club’s PR consultant Andy Skinner is to donate the “Tony Flanagan Trophy” in memory of the popular press and PR photographer who died of cancer in February 2013.
He said: “Flan was almost a fixture at corporate and charity golf days for over three decades. He was the ‘go-to’ photographer for organisers who wanted to ensure maximum coverage for their events.
“The intention is that the Tony Flanagan Trophy will be played for annually with the winning team holding it for a year before defending their win in the next West Midlands Corporate Golf Challenge.
“We are seeking to establish an early summer event which will become a fixture in the corporate calendar and Redditch Golf Club with its excellent course, great facilities and central location close to the M5 and M42 is the ideal base from which to launch it.”
It is also intended that the event will raise money for the Redditch club captain’s annual charity which this year’s captain Nigel Clay has chosen as Parkinsons Disease.
Nigel Clay said: “We want to establish the West Midlands Corporate Golf Challenge as a fun and competitive event but in a charitable context.
“I hope businesses will rally to the cause and help in any way they can.
“The obvious way is to enter a team, but there will also be plenty of sponsorship opportunities and the potential to donate auction or raffle prizes.
“Corporates and even non golfers can either take up the major sponsorship package or sponsor individual tees to help us donate as much as possible to find a cure for such as pernicious disease as Parkinsons Disease.
“I believe every annual captain at Redditch will aim to make this a central plank of their fund raising in coming years – whatever charity they choose for their particular 12 month tenure.
“The aim is to make this a memorable and enjoyable occasion which becomes a recognised annual event,” he said.
